Working Mom

I have two jobs.  Well actually three, and maybe even a total of four:

Project Manager with OptumHealth
Accessory designer extraordinaire
Budding Blogger
Mother and Wife

Sad that the most important job gets named last.

Mad Men is a show that I DVR every week and would watch in reruns if it were on.  (If you haven't seen it, check it out - Sunday nights on AMC)  I envy Betty Drapier for having a nanny take the kids, make dinner, clean the house while she goes off to ride horses.

But I also adore Joan.  Strong, gorgeous - career-focused, even if she started with Sterling Cooper as "just" a receptionist.

So which is the right woman to be?  Both are gorgeous.  Both have men falling to their feet.  Both are seemingly happy, though plot-lines will suggest otherwise at times.  And they're both moms (it takes Joanie awhile to get there, but SPOILER ALERT, it happens.)  So who to idolize?

In short, I choose the best of both worlds, which I realize is a total cop-out answer.  I love my kids and I wish I could be the stay-at-home mom who makes all the cute hands-on fun things you see out on Pinterest.  But I am good at my other job - that one that takes me out of the home for 40 hours a week (sometimes more).  I am smart, and I do my job well.  I am super fortunate to work for an organization that supports the work/life balance and have managers who are mothers as well.  Good to know that you're on the same page with someone who's writing your reviews once a year.  If I didn't have their support, I don't know if I could make it work.  And if I didn't know that my paycheck means more fun and good things for my family, I certainly WOULDN'T make it work.

I came across this article on The Ladder - it has a cute little info graphic on being a working mother.  Nothing was too shocking, but it was still nice to see that I wasn't alone.
